Congratulations on your first HGB video on the HGB channel! I like the look of your presentation space as it conveys a cool sense of the high tech future we all hope is still developing for full immersion, just around the corner. Which also amplifies the sense of where we'd hope the Vision Quest is heading, but as you explain, it's not there yet. Thanks for the straightforward approach to a complex topic that's seen more than its fair share of hype. As you point out, the value of the iPhone was apparent on day one, while the value of consumer headsets is yet to be established.

But I still have a question: if you pair the Vision Pro with a Mac computer to see its screen, can you experience OpenSim through the headset? (And if you can, is it an improvement to using a monitor, or something already more immersive like a curved monitor or three monitors side by side wrapping around the user?)

From what I've heard -- and what the guy in the Apple store told me -- the immersive stuff that the headset shows is in Apple's own immersive format, not regular 3D or 360 videos. For example, a lot of people are complaining that they can't watch VR porn.

I'm guessing that this will change very quickly, though. I mean, either someone will come out with a conversion utility or Apple will add support.

Meanwhile, I *have* experienced OpenSim through a headset and you do NOT want to do that. The OpenSim framerate is extremely inconsistent. It's not a problem on a flat screen, but when you're immersed in it, your body immediately thinks that something is wrong with your vision -- maybe you ate a bad mushroom! -- and wants you to throw up.

Hello to everyone, anyone know if there exist any good grid, which no have copy bot stuff free from SL?, as almost all grids from this list have maitreya body, mesh heads and a lot steal from SL, can't find one grid

Hi Maria, please do you know one grid honest and clean without copy bot stuff?.

It's what people want to use so even the grids that don't directly provide those things, people eventually will bring that content in. Even some closed grids have such things. Best to just ignore it, it's what the original creators do as well, because it's not worth fighting.

Best way to fix it would be a good alternative like Ruth2.0, but that needs some competent to revive it and actually make it worth it. No point in a body if it is worse than the others and even the system shape... and not having any clothes for it either.

"Many OpenSim grids have plenty of room for improvement when it comes to
business management, marketing, and community building. The AI can help." Normally you don't need "AI" for this. A couple braincells are usually enough. Though those seem in short supply for some.

That the school systems in many countries actively make people not want to learn anything is a given, but it should not mean that we should just accept that and pawn our brains off to some algorithm that can't even properly draw a circle. Plenty of sci-fi material with the message of avoiding just that, but the lemmings that we are just jumping on it the first opportunity that presents itself. Scary.

Stupidity should be called out. You should feel ashamed for being stupid, not proud. It should serve as a painful reminder to better yourself, not an excuse to just use an "AI" to do your tasks. Self-improvement should be a lifelong goal. An "AI" has to be trained too and given knowledge to function, humans are no different, so if anything take that away from using an "AI", it's literally making more effort of self-improvement than most humans these days.

Here's an article just out that highlights current realistic benefits and shortcomings of using generative AI for computer game narratives. I especially like the coined term for NPCs driven by AI responses: "oatmeal". There's also a cautionary point presented about the impact on junior writers being replaced, which depletes from developing senior writers. https://www.npr.org/2024/03...

Thanks for the article. It covers a lot of ground and I loved the examples.

I've used ChatGPT 3.5 to do some writing and once asked it for a bubble sort in python. The writing I got back was quite impressive and produced instantaneously. (I used to teach writing to college freshpersons. ChatGPT 3.5 would have done well in my course.) The python code ran without any problems. So my first experiences with AI were amazing to me -- not something to scoff at at all.

I liked what you had to say about the way many are reacting. It follows a pattern I've seen over and over. "Yeah sure it can play chess, but it will never beat a human at Go..." The suggestion in your article to embrace the possibilities is a much better path. I wonder, for example, if we could get an AI like Darwin to go over the open-source code that enables opensimulator grids. We will get more by learning how to use AI rather than trying to compete with it.

Finally I think the most important thing you said was about the pace of AI development. "AI is learning continuously and evolving fast." This can not be overstated.

I first heard about neural networks in 1989 in some coursework I took for a certificate in AI. Most of my teachers had backgrounds in mathematics and logic and did not like the "fuzzy logic" of neural nets and the impenetrable "black box" they operated in. Most AI programming then was based on decision trees - either/or kind of paths through a problem space using languages like lisp and prologue. We did not then have either the hardware or the data sets to do much of anything with the neural network approach. We do now. The genie is out of the bottle and quite busy granting wishes.

If you ask it for something that you can directly search for on stackoverflow that's no surprise. Try asking it something more complex or abstract and watch it crumble. More than half the things I have asked it for it made basic mistakes or didn't actually complete the code.

Again, if "AI" was really this groundbreaking the weather reports would be accurate and the fusion reactors would be working

Ummm No. Its not best to just ignore it. Using unlicensed IP is content theft. Pure and simple. Its breaking the law. And as a business owner providing services I have an obligation to try and provide an environment that respects and protects a content creators IP as much as possible. It's sad that other OpenSim grids dont observe that same requirement. In many cases having stolen content on the grid has become a part of the business model for many grids.

It's almost impossible to properly police and in a lot of jurisdictions a business is neither liable nor expected to be able to completely police their platform. Provisions like safe-harbor and other statues that exist only require action upon takedown request as it is widely accepted the ways to circumvent any content protection far outweigh the options to lock it down. Equally it's not always a clear cut case of specific content always being in violation either as you cannot observe any license granted to individuals. Making an effort to reduce this type of content comes easier in the form of providing alternatives. Sadly a certain someone has managed to completely run the only alternative for a lot of the ripped content plainly into the ground. Similarly to OpenSim itself, if you want to combat an issue like this, the best option remains to provide a better alternative. Empowering content creators in an open environment like the hypergrid is difficult and takes certain altruistic motives that not everyone possesses, which is fine. Commerce isn't impossible either, but the way most grids are run it can be a frustrating endeavor. Much like the blatant content theft is all too often ignored, observing regulations for public platforms are as well, which results in most grids being complete unknowns without ways to enforce your copyrights or handle disputes. Things like this start from the top, but as users open grids without a clue about the implications of such that'll never become widespread either. Instead the hypergrid is evermore evolving into more of a mess and this fragmentation splinters the community further. We'll see where things go, but for as much as it grows, it might not grow in the right direction.

I know this article is old, but something strange has come up with Alchemy Viewer. It no longer has a Grid List tab displayed in the Preferences! I just downloaded it (Windows version) to use for OpenSim, but without the Grid List how can I get in?

The last version of Alchemy that allows you to enter grid details for use in OpenSim is Alchemy_Project_AgileAkita version 6.5.5.1535 which can be downloaded from the Alchemy Git here - https://git.alchemyviewer.o...

Hope this helps.

Dear Serina, thank you so much. I would never have found it by myself. I managed to log in to OpenSim! Would you know why the latest Alchemys are no longer OpenSim-accessible? Thank you again :))

I looked into this and there is a discussion on AV's Discord about it: Darl — 03/23/2024 10:23 AM
Touching on this to say that even the "protocol compatible" label is weak in this case. Opensim is not compatible with Second Life in the way that it used to be historically, there was a time where the Linden viewer could connect to an Opensim host with just a grid selection, but that's no longer the case.

Second Life has grown and evolved as a both a platform and protocol, but Opensim has not embraced all of the changes Linden Lab has put forward. While some things are very similar to this day, critical bits are no longer similar which is why Alchemy does not currently support Opensim.

Thank you for the information. I picked Alchemy because it is *still* featured on all the third-party-viewer lists for OpenSim, and because I came across that old article where Jessica Lyon said it was good for OpenSim. Alchemy's website also does not say, upfront, that it used to support OpenSim sim, but no longer currently does. I had a peek at their Discord (without joining), but the sheer complexity of their multi-colored interface overwhelmed me. I am so thankful to yourself and Serina for helping me.

This 2016 article was not vetted for accuracy because the Firestorm team DID respond to the inaccuracy. Look here:
https://www.firestormviewer...

As for Alchemy and OpenSim support, this is what was recently posted in their discord server:
https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

Summary:
1. as of a month and a week ago, the Alchemy team have said they do not support OpenSim in their latest viewer;
2. as of 2016 to the present, the Firestorm team HAS and STILL supports OpenSim, albeit they'd really like it if the OpenSim devs would support the new protocols to let the FS team drop the long deprecated old SL protocols.

The Alchemy webpage, as I said, had not posted the 'non-OpenSim' information up front as per April 7th 2024. If the information was on the website somewhere, I couldn't locate it. As for their Discord server, it was so convoluted, with so many symbols and colors and animations, that I had no idea how to proceed or even look for information. (I didn't realise Discord had such a high learning curve until I saw the Alchemy channel!) Unfortunately, the Alchemy viewer remains on most (all?) of the third-party viewer lists for Opensim use. Without Serina's input below, I would *never* have found the last version of Alchemy which had the grid-list.

Oh this is so upsetting. I've been a recurring visitor to 3RG for a long time I'm on a fixed income and couldn't afford a sim but was thinking of changing that this year. There's a big trek contingent in 3rd Rock. I guess not now. Also, sad to read that Kira Tiponi passed on.
